Our private tours in Portugal are day trips with your own car and driver-guide, from five starting points: Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira and São Miguel in the Azores. Each tour is for your group alone, from one person up to sixteen in two vehicles. You are collected at your hotel, and the stops can change on the day.

From Lisbon there is a five-hour city tour of the viewpoints, Alfama, the Baixa and Belém, and a full day to Sintra and Cascais that reaches Pena Palace as its gates open, then Quinta da Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and the coast road home. From Porto, the Douro Valley tour follows the river to Peso da Régua and Pinhão, with two quintas and a tasting. Your driver does not drink, which is rather the point.

In the south, the Algarve tours run west along the cliffs to Praia da Marinha, Benagil, Lagos and Sagres, or east to Faro, the Ria Formosa and Tavira. On Madeira you choose between the west, with Cabo Girão and the lava pools of Porto Moniz, and the east, with Pico do Arieiro, Santana and Ponta de São Lourenço. On São Miguel, one day takes in Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas. The guides to day trips from Lisbon, the Algarve and Madeira compare the tours side by side.

When to go to Portugal

Summer is the busiest time everywhere. In Lisbon, the night of 12 to 13 June is Santo António: the traditional neighbourhoods parade down the Avenida da Liberdade, and Alfama, Graça, Bica and Mouraria fill with street parties and grilled sardines until early the next morning. The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém is closed on 13 June, as it is every Monday.

The Douro has hot, dry summers and cold winters. September and early October are the harvest, when the valley is at its fullest and the quintas are at their busiest, so book further ahead.

On São Miguel, June to September is the season for the thermal pools at Furnas and also the busiest; May and October are milder, with fewer groups, and fog is common at the caldeiras in autumn and winter. On Madeira the mountain weather changes quickly, and the north and south of the island can have different weather on the same day. Bring a layer.

Good to know before you go

Sintra: Pena Palace runs on timed tickets

Entry to Pena Palace is for a date and a time, and early or late arrivals are not admitted. Cars cannot drive up to the palace: from the park gate it is about 30 minutes on foot or by the park shuttle, whose ticket is bought in advance. Book online before you come, and choose a time that leaves room for the walk.

Madeira's walking trails must be booked

Since 1 January 2026 every classified walking trail (PR) on Madeira, including the Pico do Arieiro path and Ponta de São Lourenço, must be booked and paid on the regional SIMplifica portal for a 30-minute start slot, up to 30 days ahead. Walking without a booking can be fined. Rules change, so check before you travel and tell us which walk you want.

Benagil is seen from the water

Since 2024, landing on the beach inside the Benagil cave and swimming to it are banned. You see it from a licensed boat or a guided kayak, booked with a local operator, and the sea decides whether they run. We time the day around your slot.

Fingerprints at your first entry

Portugal is in the Schengen area. Since 12 October 2025 the EU's Entry/Exit System records the fingerprints and a facial image of non-EU travellers on short stays when they cross the border, so the first arrival can take longer. Check the current rules for your passport before you travel.

Questions about private tours in Portugal

How much does a private tour in Portugal cost?

The price is for the car and driver, not per seat, so it depends on how many of you travel. Tours start from €190 for a small group in a sedan; larger groups go in a van or two. Choose the number of people when you book.

Where do the tours start?

At your hotel or address in Lisbon, Porto, Algarve, Madeira and São Miguel. You are collected at the door and taken back at the end, or dropped wherever you are going next.

Can we change the stops?

Yes. The car and driver are yours for the day, so you can stay longer somewhere, skip a stop or add one on the way. Tell us before if a change needs a ticket booked.

Are entrance tickets included?

No. The price covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Entrances, boat trips, tastings and lunch are paid separately, and each tour page lists what applies.

What is the best day trip from Lisbon?

It depends on your time. With half a day, the Lisbon city tour shows the shape of the city without the climbing. With a full day, Sintra and Cascais adds the palaces, Cabo da Roca and the Atlantic coast.

Can we cancel?

Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour, with a full refund.
