Uruguay's coast runs from the old Portuguese town of Colonia del Sacramento on the River Plate, through the capital, to the beaches of Punta del Este and the lighthouse of José Ignacio on the Atlantic. Our private tours in Uruguay leave from Montevideo and Punta del Este. The car and the driver are yours for the day, so you set the pace and can change the order of the stops as you go.

In Montevideo, half-day tours cover the Ciudad Vieja, Plaza Independencia, the Legislative Palace and the Mercado del Puerto, or the Rambla along the river to the Estadio Centenario, Pocitos and Carrasco. A full day adds the view from the Cerro. Day trips go west to Colonia del Sacramento, whose historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and east to Punta del Este and Casapueblo.

From Punta del Este you can see La Mano on Playa Brava, the lighthouse, the port and the wavy bridge to La Barra, then Casapueblo, the white house-museum on the cliffs of Punta Ballena, and the Lussich Arboretum. A day east goes to the lighthouse village of José Ignacio, the round bridge over Laguna Garzón and the vineyards of Garzón, and a day west goes to Montevideo. To compare them, read our guides to day trips from Montevideo and day trips from Punta del Este.

When to go to Uruguay

The seasons are the reverse of Europe's. In Montevideo the warm months run from early December to mid-March, with average highs above 24 °C, and the cool season from late May to late August, with highs below 17 °C; July is the coldest month. It is a windy city, most of all from late August to late February, so bring a windproof layer for the Rambla in any season.

Punta del Este has two lives. January and February are the high season, with traffic on the coast road and in La Barra, especially at weekends. In winter it is quiet and some restaurants close. December is the sunniest month, with more than nine hours of sun a day on average, against fewer than four in June and July.

Cruise ships call at Punta del Este from November to April, landing passengers by tender at the port.

Good to know before you go

Sundays in the Ciudad Vieja

Montevideo's old town is quiet on Sundays and many of its shops stay shut. The Mercado del Puerto is open and busy at lunchtime. If you want the shops, pick a weekday or a Saturday.

Crossing to Buenos Aires

Colonia is also a ferry port for Buenos Aires, about an hour and a half away. If you are crossing at the end of the Colonia day, we drop you at the terminal instead of driving back. Carry your passport.

Book the winery ahead

Visits and tastings at Bodega Garzón must be booked ahead, even a stop for coffee, and are paid at the winery. Book at least 24 hours before, and earlier in December, January and Carnival. Tell us your time and we plan the day around it.

On a cruise call

Tours can start and end at the cruise port in Montevideo or at the port of Punta del Este. Tell your driver your all-aboard time, and choose a half-day tour if your time ashore is short.

Questions about private tours in Uruguay

How much does a private tour in Uruguay cost?

It depends on the tour and the size of your group, from €180. You pay for the vehicle, not per seat: up to four people travel in a sedan, up to eight in a van, and larger groups in two vehicles. Choose your group size on each tour page.

Where do the tours start?

At your hotel or apartment in Montevideo and Punta del Este. Half-day tours start at 07:00 or 13:00; full days start at 07:00.

Can we do Colonia del Sacramento as a day trip from Montevideo?

Yes. It is about two and a quarter hours each way, with the morning on foot in the old town and lunch there. If you are going on to Buenos Aires by ferry, we can end the day at the terminal.

Can we go from Punta del Este to Montevideo for the day?

Yes. The drive is about two hours each way. You see the Legislative Palace, the Ciudad Vieja and the Rambla, and the day can end at Carrasco airport or the port instead of your hotel.

Can we change the stops?

Yes. The car is yours, so the order and the time at each stop can change on the day. Tell your driver in the morning.

Can we cancel?

Yes. Cancel up to 24 hours before pick-up for a full refund.
