Portugal planning guidePlanning a day on the western Algarve coast, from Benagil to Sagres

Oct 15, 2026, 6 min read, by Exclusive World Tours

This guide is for you if you are staying in the Algarve and want the western cliffs in one day: Praia da Marinha, the Benagil sea cave, Ponta da Piedade at Lagos, Sagres and Cape St Vincent. Most of the planning is about Benagil, because it is the one stop that depends on the sea and on rules that changed in 2024.

Benagil: what changed, and what it means for you

Since 13 August 2024 the cave has had stricter rules. The final version was agreed at a meeting chaired by the Captain of the Port of Portimão, and these are the ones that shape your visit:

  • You can no longer land on the beach inside the cave or use the sand. You see it from the water.
  • Swimming to the caves, or reaching them on anything that floats, is banned.
  • Kayaks cannot be rented without a guide in the cave area, and guided kayak groups must have one guide kayak for every six kayaks.
  • There are limits on how many boats and kayaks can be inside at once, and on how long each visit lasts.

Fines are set for boat operators who break the rules. In practice, you choose between a boat trip and a guided kayak trip, both run by local operators from Benagil beach. Neither is included in the tour.

The sea decides whether they run. Book with an operator once your date is fixed, and tell us the time you booked. We plan the day around it. If the boats are cancelled on the day, you still have the clifftop and the beach, and the rest of the coast is unaffected.

How the day fits together

You are collected at 07:00, anywhere in the Algarve. The times below are from Albufeira, so they shift a little if you are further east or west. You are back at your hotel in the afternoon, at around 15:00.

The cliffs come first, while the light is low. At 07:45 you go down the steps to Praia da Marinha and walk the clifftop path above it. Benagil follows at 08:45. At 10:15 you reach Lagos for the arches and stacks of Ponta da Piedade, seen from the cliffs, then lunch in the old town, which is not included. Sagres is at 12:30, and Cape St Vincent at 13:15.

Because it is a private day with your own vehicle, you can move time around. Stay longer at Ponta da Piedade, skip the fortress, or linger at the cape. Tell your driver what matters to you in the morning.

Sagres and Cape St Vincent

The fortress at Sagres dates from the fifteenth century, in the time of Prince Henry, the figure most associated with Portugal's age of discovery. It was built mainly to defend the coast from pirates and corsairs. Inside is a huge stone circle, the Rosa dos Ventos, which tradition links to the navigation lessons said to have been given here. Entrance is not included, and tickets are sold on site.

The fortress keeps seasonal hours: from May to September it opens at 09:30 and closes at 20:00, and from October to April it closes at 17:30. You arrive at around 12:30, well inside those hours, but check before you go, as hours change.

Cape St Vincent follows at 13:15. Its lighthouse has worked since October 1846 and stands 28 metres tall. The fortress around it was built in the sixteenth century and rebuilt in the seventeenth and eighteenth. Inside is a chapel on the spot where, by tradition, São Vicente was buried.

On your own, or with a driver

You can see parts of this coast on your own, especially if you have a car. The difficulty is the order and the distance. Benagil is near the middle of the coast, Lagos to the west, and Sagres and the cape at the far end. Done in one day, it is a lot of driving and a lot of parking in small places.

A private day gives you the clifftop stops in the morning light, a driver who knows where to stop, and the freedom to stay longer where you want. Fuel, tolls and parking are included. The price depends on the size of your group; see it on the tour page.

For a quieter alternative, with lagoons and towns instead of cliffs, see our eastern Algarve tour. Our guide to Algarve private tours compares the two.

What to book or bring

  • Your Benagil boat or kayak booking, made directly with a local operator, and its time.
  • Trainers, not flip-flops. The steps at Praia da Marinha and the clifftop paths need proper shoes.
  • Sun protection and water. Most of the morning is outdoors on the cliffs.
  • Money or a card for the boat, the fortress and lunch.

Who it suits, and who should think twice

It suits a first visit to the Algarve, families, and anyone who wants the coastline more than the beaches. It is a full day on the move, with short walks at most stops.

  • Limited mobility. The steps to Praia da Marinha and the clifftop paths are the hard parts. Tell us when you book and we can plan around them.
  • Arriving at Faro airport. We can collect you at the airport and start the tour from your flight. Message us with your flight details.
  • Bad sea days. If the cave is the only reason you are coming, keep a flexible date, or pick a back-up day in case the boats do not run.

Questions people ask

Can we land on the beach inside the cave?

No. Since August 2024 nobody may land on or use the sand inside the Benagil cave. You see it from a boat or a guided kayak.

Can we kayak on our own?

Not in the cave area. Unguided kayak rental there is banned. Book a guided trip.

Can we cancel?

Yes. Cancel up to 24 hours before pick-up and you are refunded in full. See our cancellation page. Boat bookings follow the operator's own rules.
