From Paris, a day by car reaches a royal palace, the painter's garden that gave the world the water lilies, the châteaux of the Loire and the beaches where the Allies landed in 1944. All our private tours in France start in Paris, at your hotel or any address you give us. The vehicle and the driver are yours for the day, and the stops move to suit you.

The Paris private tour by car is four hours across the city, with the door opening at the Trocadéro for the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and the Tuileries, Notre-Dame and the Île de la Cité, and Montmartre. Versailles and Giverny spends the morning at the palace and its gardens and the afternoon at Monet's house and garden.

The two longest days go further. Loire Valley castles is twelve hours to Chambord, Amboise and Chenonceau. Normandy D-Day beaches is thirteen hours to Arromanches, Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery and Pointe du Hoc. To compare them side by side, read our guide to day trips from Paris.

When to go to France

August is one of the hottest months in Paris, with daytime highs around 25°C, and peak season: the big sights are crowded and queues are longer. It is also when many Parisians go on holiday, so some smaller shops and restaurants close. Monet's house and gardens at Giverny open from 1 April to 1 November; outside those months we plan the Versailles day differently. The Musical Fountains season in the gardens of Versailles runs from about early April to early November (check this year's dates), and on show days the gardens charge for entry.

In Normandy the D-Day anniversary brings events on all five landing beaches and in Sainte-Mère-Église, Bayeux and Arromanches in the days around 6 June each year: a moving time to go, and a busy one. In Paris, on the first Sunday of each month the centre of the city and the Champs-Élysées are kept for pedestrians for most of the day, which changes the route of a tour by car.

Good to know before you go

Book timed tickets early

Entrances are not included on our France tours. The Palace of Versailles needs a time slot booked in advance, Monet's house sells out its online quota in season, and the Eiffel Tower summit tickets go on sale 90 days ahead and sell out quickly in July, August and the Christmas holidays. The Normandy beaches are free to visit.

Check the closing days

The Palace of Versailles is closed on Mondays and the Louvre on Tuesdays. The Normandy American Cemetery is closed on 25 December and 1 January. We check your date against the stops when you book.

Watch your bag in the crowds

Pickpocketing and bag and phone snatching happen often in France, at tourist sites and on public transport. With a private car you can leave bags and shopping in the vehicle between stops.

Little room for luggage at the sights

The Eiffel Tower bans large bags and has no storage, the Versailles left luggage service is suspended, and Monet's house only allows cabin-size bags. If you are travelling on the day you leave, your suitcases stay in the car.

Questions about private tours in France

How much does a private tour in France cost?

The price is for the whole group, not per person, and depends on how many of you travel and the vehicle that needs. Prices start from €600. You see the exact figure when you choose the number of people.

Where do the tours start?

In Paris. We collect you from any hotel or address in the city, and we can also start at Gare du Nord or the airport with your luggage in the car.

What is the best day trip from Paris?

Versailles and Giverny if you want a palace and a garden without a long drive. The Loire Valley for Renaissance châteaux. Normandy for the D-Day beaches: the longest day, and one that stays with people.

Can we go up the Eiffel Tower?

Yes, with tickets booked in advance. Allow about two hours, so it suits a longer day. Tell us and we plan it.

Can we stay a night in the Loire or Normandy?

Yes, and it makes a gentler trip. We take you one day and bring you back the next. Ask us for a price.

Can we cancel?

Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start, refunded in full.
