Our private tours in Mexico start from three very different places. In Mexico City there is the Aztec Templo Mayor beside the Zócalo, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Frida Kahlo's Blue House in Coyoacán and the canals of Xochimilco, and day trips out to the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon at Teotihuacan, to the great pyramid of Cholula and the tiled centre of Puebla, and to the stone warriors of Tula.
From Cancún the days go into the Yucatán peninsula: Chichén Itzá and the colonial town of Valladolid, Tulum on its cliff above the Caribbean and Cobá under the jungle, Ek Balam, and the cenotes inland from Puerto Morelos. In Oaxaca the tours stay in the Central Valleys: the Zapotec city of Monte Albán, the Tree of Tule, Mitla, the mineral pools of Hierve el Agua, and the villages where black pottery, alebrijes and rugs are made.
Every tour is private. The car and the driver are for your group only, from the pick-up at your hotel to the drop-off. The price covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking, and depends on how many of you travel, up to 16 people in two vans. Entrances and meals are paid on the day, and the order of the stops can change to suit you.

When to go to Mexico
Around Oaxaca the rainy season runs from about June to September, when the water at Hierve el Agua flows most strongly. On the Caribbean coast the Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November, and September is the month of highest risk for Mexico. Sargassum seaweed reaches the beaches around Cancún and Tulum from about March; check this year's forecast for when it peaks.
Some dates change the day. Around the spring equinox, about 20 to 22 March, Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacan draw their biggest crowds of the year, and the Basilica of Guadalupe fills with pilgrims on 11 and 12 December. In Oaxaca the Guelaguetza falls in late July (check this year's dates), and during the Day of the Dead, from late October to 2 November, traffic in the old centre almost stops. Tell us your date and we plan the order around it.
Good to know before you go
Two clocks on the Yucatán days
Cancún runs on south-east time (UTC-5), an hour ahead of central Mexico and of Yucatán state, where Chichén Itzá, Ek Balam and Valladolid are. Your driver works to Cancún time all day, so check which clock an opening time or a ticket refers to.
Cash and the cenotes
Each cenote charges its own entry, often in cash, and life vests are compulsory in the water. Creams of any kind, sun cream included, are not allowed, and some cenotes ask you to shower before you swim. Bring cash for the cenotes, Hierve el Agua and the craft workshops, where most take nothing else.
Mondays and closing days
Templo Mayor, the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Maya Museum in Cancún are closed on Mondays, and the Museum of the Cultures of Oaxaca on Sundays and Mondays. Teotihuacan, Chichén Itzá and Monte Albán open every day. Book the Frida Kahlo Museum on its own website before the day: tickets are sold for a set time.
Sun at the big sites
Teotihuacan, Chichén Itzá, Tula and Monte Albán are open sites with little shade. Bring a hat, sun cream and water. Climbing El Castillo at Chichén Itzá has not been allowed since 2006; at Ek Balam the Acropolis can still be climbed.

Questions about private tours in Mexico
How much does a private tour in Mexico cost?
The price is for the car and driver, not per person, and depends on how many of you travel. Tours in Mexico start from €120. Entrances and meals are extra.
Where do the tours start?
At your hotel or apartment in Mexico City, Cancún and Oaxaca. Half-day tours start at 07:00 or 13:00, full days at 07:00.
Can we change the stops?
Yes. The car is yours for the tour and the itinerary can change on the day: add a cenote, skip a museum or stay longer where you like, within the hours you booked.
What is the best day trip from Cancún?
It depends on what you want. For the great Maya city, Chichén Itzá with a cenote and Valladolid, in 12 hours. For ruins above the sea and a pyramid in the jungle, Tulum and Cobá. For a Maya city you can still climb, Ek Balam.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver takes you between the sites and waits for you. At Teotihuacan and Chichén Itzá licensed guides can be hired at the entrance and are paid there.
Can we cancel?
Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour, with a full refund.
