The Douro at Pinhao, with terraced vineyards

Private day tour from PortoPorto & Douro Valley Private Experience

The oldest demarcated wine region in the world, an hour and a half inland: terraces cut into schist above a river, and the quintas that have been shipping port down it for three hundred years.

The day

Two quintas rather than four. The valley is better seen slowly, and the roads are not built for rushing.

07:00

Porto, your hotel door

Inland along the river. The first hour is motorway; after that the road follows the water and does not stop being beautiful.

09:00

Peso da Regua

Where the valley opens out and the terraces start climbing both banks. The first proper view, and the one that explains why this is a World Heritage landscape.

10:15

A quinta, and a tasting

A working estate: how the grapes are still trodden by foot in some of them, how the wine is fortified, and why the port went downriver in flat-bottomed boats.
Tasting not included

11:45

Pinhao

A small railway town with a station tiled in azulejos showing the harvest. The centre of the valley, and the prettiest stretch of the river.

12:45

Lunch above the river

At a quinta or in a village, with the valley below. Your guide books it in the morning once you have said what you like.

14:00

A second quinta

A different scale from the first — usually a smaller, family-run estate, where the person pouring made the wine.
Tasting not included

17:00

Back at your hotel

Roughly. Nobody has ever complained that this day ran long.

Because they vary from a few euros to a lot, and bundling them would mean charging everyone for the expensive option. You pay at each quinta for what you actually taste.

Yes. There are one-hour rabelo trips from Pinhao that fit the day well. Tell us when you book and we will time the itinerary around it.

Two vehicles travelling together, on one booking. Message us and we will price it.

Yes. Every tour is customisable: a different start time, extra stops, more time where you like it, or a longer day. Tell us when you book.

Message us and we'll move it if we can — we work with several drivers, so there is usually room. More than 24 hours ahead costs nothing.
