Our private tours in Chile start from three places a long way apart. In Santiago you see the Plaza de Armas, La Moneda, Santa Lucía Hill and the view from San Cristóbal Hill, and drive out to the painted hills of Valparaíso and the seafront of Viña del Mar, up the Cajón del Maipo to the El Yeso reservoir, to the Concha y Toro cellars in Pirque, or over the hairpins of Los Caracoles to Portillo and the Laguna del Inca.

From San Pedro de Atacama the days go into the desert: the Valle de la Luna, the El Tatio geysers at 4,320 metres, the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons and Piedras Rojas, Laguna Cejar and Tebinquiche on the salt flat, and the Rainbow Valley with the rock carvings of Yerbas Buenas. From Puerto Natales you reach Torres del Paine National Park by car, with Laguna Amarga, the Salto Grande, Lago Pehoé and the icebergs of Lago Grey, the Milodon Cave, and an early drive for walkers heading to the Base Torres.

Every tour is private. The car and the driver are for your group only, from the pick-up at your hotel to the drop-off. The price covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking, and depends on how many of you travel, up to 16 people in two vans. Park passes, entrances and meals are paid separately, and the order of the stops can change with the weather.

When to go to Chile

In Santiago the summer, December to February, is often above 30 °C and is the time for the beaches of Viña del Mar. Autumn, March to May, is calmer, with the grape harvest in the nearby valleys; winter, June to August, is the coolest season, and snow can close the roads to Portillo and El Yeso. Around 18 and 19 September the Fiestas Patrias bring parades, music and fireworks.

The Atacama can be visited all year. In January and February the altiplanic winter can bring storms that close some roads, and in winter early mornings at El Tatio drop well below zero and snow can close the way to the Miscanti lagoons. In Torres del Paine, December to February is the busiest time, with about 18 hours of daylight and the strongest winds; the wind drops in March, and April is much quieter. In June there are barely nine hours of daylight and some trails and boats close for the winter.

Good to know before you go

Torres del Paine passes are online only

Park passes are sold online only, on CONAF's official site, and must be bought before the day. Bring the QR code and your passport: there is no internet at the gate. Milodon Cave tickets are sold the same way.

Altitude in the Atacama

San Pedro is at about 2,400 m, El Tatio at 4,320 m and the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons above 4,000 m. Spend a night or two in San Pedro before the high days. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, however fit; avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours.

Tickets and cash in San Pedro

Tickets for the Valle de la Luna, Laguna Cejar, Chaxa and the Miscanti lagoons are sold online; buy them in advance. Tebinquiche, Yerbas Buenas and the Rainbow Valley are paid on site in cash, in Chilean pesos. Laguna Cejar is closed on Tuesdays.

Wind and weather in Patagonia

Wind and cloud in Torres del Paine change by the hour, and some trails close when the wind passes 80 km/h. Your driver changes the order of the stops to give you the best chance of clear views. Bring windproof layers and waterproofs.
