Our private tours in Colombia start from three cities. In Bogotá you go up Monserrate for the view, then down to La Candelaria, the Plaza de Bolívar, the Gold Museum and the old village of Usaquén, and out of the city to the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral, 180 metres underground, to Lake Guatavita, the crater lake of the El Dorado legend, or to the Boyacá bridge and the colonial town of Villa de Leyva.
From Medellín there is Plaza Botero, Cerro Nutibara and the Pueblito Paisa, the botanical garden and El Poblado, and days out to the rock of El Peñol and the painted town of Guatapé, to Santa Fe de Antioquia and its bridge over the Cauca, and to Jardín in the coffee hills. In Cartagena you see the walled city and Getsemaní, the fortress of San Felipe and the convent on La Popa hill, and go south to the white sand of Playa Blanca on Barú, or inland to San Basilio de Palenque.
Every tour is private. The car and the driver are for your group only, from the pick-up at your hotel to the drop-off. The price covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking, and depends on how many of you travel, up to 16 people in two vans. Entrances and meals are paid on the day, and the order of the stops can change to suit you.

When to go to Colombia
Colombia changes with altitude more than with the calendar. Bogotá is cool all year, with highs of about 18 to 20 °C; the drier months are January, February, July and August, and April has the most rainy days. Medellín stays between about 16 and 26 °C with rain through the year, and is driest from mid-December to early March. In Cartagena the dry season runs from December to April, and September and October are the wettest months.
Cartagena is busiest from December to March, in July and August, and at Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, and quieter in May, September and October. Some dates fill a city: the Feria de las Flores in Medellín (usually late July to early August; check this year's dates), the Independence festivities in Cartagena (in November; check this year's dates), and the Festival de Luces in Villa de Leyva on 7 and 8 December. Tell us your date and we plan the order around it.
Good to know before you go
Altitude in Bogotá
Bogotá is at about 2,640 m and Monserrate about 500 m higher; the walk at Lake Guatavita is at around 3,100 m. Take the first day slowly and drink water.
Cash for entrances
Lake Guatavita and the rock of El Peñol take cash only. At Playa Blanca, sunbeds, hammocks and lunch are paid in cash too: agree prices before you sit down.
Closing days
The Gold Museum is closed on Mondays, holidays included, and free on Sundays with a time slot booked in advance. The Botero Museum closes on Tuesdays and Lake Guatavita on Mondays. Tell us your date and we set the order around it.
Keep your things close
The UK government's travel advice warns of pickpocketing and mugging in Colombia's big cities, and of drugs given in food, drinks or cigarettes. Keep phones out of sight, accept nothing from strangers, and use app-based or hotel-booked taxis. Between the stops you are in your own car.

Questions about private tours in Colombia
How much does a private tour in Colombia cost?
The price is for the car and driver, not per person, and depends on how many of you travel. Tours in Colombia start from €120. Entrances and meals are extra.
Where do the tours start?
At your hotel or address in Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena. Half-day tours start at 07:00 or 13:00, full days at 07:00. In Cartagena we can also collect you from a cruise ship: tell us the ship and the time when you book.
Can we change the stops?
Yes. The car is yours for the tour and the itinerary can change on the day, within the hours you booked.
What is the best day trip from Medellín?
For the big view, Guatapé and El Peñol: the 740 steps up the rock, the view over the reservoir islands and the painted town, in ten hours. For colonial streets and a river bridge, Santa Fe de Antioquia. For coffee country, Jardín.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver takes you between the sites and waits for you. At Lake Guatavita the walk is with a park guide, included in the entrance, and in San Basilio de Palenque a local guide is paid in the village.
Can we cancel?
Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour, with a full refund.
