Our private tours in Italy are day trips with your own car and driver, from seven starting points: Rome, Florence, Sorrento, Taormina, Palermo, Olbia and Cagliari. Each tour is for your group alone, from one person up to sixteen in two vehicles, with collection at your hotel and stops that can change on the day.
From Rome, the Rome day tour by car links the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum and the Forum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and St Peter's Square. The Pompeii and Amalfi Coast day trip goes south for the ruins and the coast road to Positano, and Tivoli is a shorter day for Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. From Florence, the Chianti wine tour stops at Greve, Panzano, Castellina and two wineries, and another day covers Siena and San Gimignano. From Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast tour takes in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.
In Sicily, one tour climbs Mount Etna to the Silvestri craters before Taormina, and another runs from Palermo's old town to Monreale and Cefalù. In Sardinia, from Olbia you see Porto Cervo, Palau and Capo Testa; from Cagliari, the Castello quarter, Nora and Chia. The guides to day trips from Rome and Florence, and to Sicily and Sardinia, compare them.

When to go to Italy
The big sites are at their fullest in the warm months. At Pompeii the peak period runs from 16 March to 14 October, and most visitors arrive in the morning. State sites such as the Colosseum and Villa d'Este are free on the first Sunday of the month, which brings crowds. From late October to February the Colosseum closes earlier, with last admission at 15:30.
Summer changes some days. Siena's Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August, and the crowds fill the centre. Ravello's festival runs from July to early September, and Palermo celebrates Santa Rosalia on the night of 14 to 15 July. On the Amalfi Coast, the busiest weekends and all of August bring traffic limits for private cars.
In Chianti the harvest falls between September and October, and Greve hosts the Expo Chianti Classico on the second weekend of September. In Cagliari, the Festa di Sant'Efisio fills the first four days of May with processions in traditional dress.
Good to know before you go
Book the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain
The Colosseum needs a time slot, booked in advance; tickets carry your name, sales open 30 days before, and you show ID at the entrance. Since 2 February 2026 the area closest to the Trevi Fountain basin also needs a ticket, from 09:00 to 22:00, paid by card only.
Licensed guides inside the sites
In Italy, guiding inside monuments and archaeological sites is reserved for licensed guides. Your driver takes you there and back; if you want a guide inside the Colosseum, Pompeii or the cathedrals, we can book one to meet you at the gate.
The Amalfi Coast plate rule
On busy days the coast road between Positano and Vietri sul Mare is open to private cars on alternate days by number plate, rental cars included. Hired cars with a driver are exempt, so the private tour runs whatever the date.
Leave the sand in Sardinia
Sardinian law bans taking even small amounts of sand, pebbles, stones or shells from the beaches, and fines apply. Customs at the port of Olbia have seized it from passengers.

Questions about private tours in Italy
How much does a private tour in Italy cost?
The price is for the car and driver, not per seat, so it depends on how many of you travel. Tours start from €240 for a small group in a sedan; larger groups go in a van or two. Choose the number of people when you book.
Where do the tours start?
At your hotel in Rome, Florence, Sorrento, Taormina, Palermo, Olbia and Cagliari. On the Amalfi Coast, in Sicily and around Olbia, you can also be collected along the coast; each tour page says where.
Is a guide included?
The price includes the vehicle and the driver, plus fuel, tolls and parking. Guiding inside the sites is reserved in Italy for licensed guides, and we can book one to meet you. Entrances and lunch are paid separately.
Can we change the stops?
Yes. The car is yours for the day, so you can stay longer, skip a stop or add one. Tell us before if a change needs a timed ticket.
What is the best day trip from Rome?
It depends on what you want from the day. Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast is a long day with the ruins and the sea; Tivoli is shorter, with two villas and their gardens; the Rome tour by car is for seeing the city itself without the walking between sights.
Can we cancel?
Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour, with a full refund.
