A guide to day trips from MontevideoThe city, Colonia or Punta del Este.

How long each one takes, what is not included, and which to pick if you only have one day.

Montevideo is a port on the River Plate, with the Ciudad Vieja on its point and a long riverside promenade, the Rambla, running east to Carrasco. Colonia del Sacramento is about 180 km to the west, and Punta del Este about 130 km to the east. Here is what each of our five involves.

One day in the city: the full-day tour, from the Cerro to Carrasco. One day out of it: Colonia del Sacramento, for the old Portuguese town.

How to choose

You have one day in the city

The full-day tour. Eight hours from 07:00, west to east: the view from the Cerro across the bay, the Prado, the Legislative Palace, Plaza Independencia and the Ciudad Vieja on foot, lunch at the Mercado del Puerto, the Estadio Centenario of the first World Cup final, and the Rambla past Pocitos to Carrasco.

You only have half a day, and want the old city

The old city tour. Four hours, starting at 07:00 or 13:00: the Legislative Palace, Plaza Independencia with the Palacio Salvo and the old city gate, Calle Sarandí to Plaza Matriz past the Teatro Solís, and the parrilla grills of the Mercado del Puerto. The Ciudad Vieja is quiet on Sundays, and many shops there are shut.

You want the river and the beaches

The Rambla tour. Four hours, starting at 07:00 or 13:00: the Estadio Centenario, Parque Rodó, the lighthouse point of Punta Carretas, a walk at Pocitos, the viewpoint at Punta Gorda and the old villas of Carrasco. It can end at the airport, which is close to Carrasco.

You want an old town out of town

Colonia del Sacramento. Ten hours, about two and a quarter each way on Ruta 1: the cobbled Barrio Histórico, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the lighthouse over the ruins of an old convent, lunch, and the old bullring at Real de San Carlos. If you are crossing to Buenos Aires, we can leave you at the ferry terminal instead.

You want the coast

Punta del Este and Casapueblo. Ten hours, about two each way: La Mano on Playa Brava, the lighthouse and the port with its sea lions, the wavy bridge to La Barra, and Casapueblo on the cliffs of Punta Ballena on the way back. If you are moving on to Punta del Este, the day can end at your hotel there.

Four things worth knowing before you book

Some things are paid on the day

The price covers the private vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Entrances, such as the football museum at the Centenario, the fortress on the Cerro, the lighthouse in Colonia and Casapueblo, and lunch are paid on the day.

Cruise ships, flights and ferries

We collect you anywhere in Montevideo, including Carrasco and the cruise port, and the full-day tour fits a cruise call. The Rambla tour can end at the airport and the Colonia day at the ferry; tell us when you book.

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us and we will do our best to move you to another day.
