This guide is for you if you have only one day in Punta del Este and want to see both sides of it: the peninsula and La Barra to the east, the hills of Punta Ballena and Casapueblo to the west. It covers why the day starts early, where you might want more time, how to handle lunch and the summer traffic, and whether to stay out for the sunset.
Why 07:00
The day starts at 07:00, and there is no later start for this tour. The reason is the order: east while the town is still waking up, west after lunch. At a quarter past seven, La Mano on Playa Brava is quiet, ahead of the summer crowds. By the time the beach fills, you are at the lighthouse and the port.
If an early start does not work for you, split the day instead. Our two half-day tours, the peninsula and La Barra and Casapueblo and Punta Ballena, each start at 07:00 or 13:00, so you can take one in the afternoon of one day and the other on another.
When to go
January and February are the busy months. Traffic thickens on the Rambla and in La Barra, and a day with seven stops feels it most. The rest of the year is quiet on the roads.
The weather averages are gentle. Highs sit around 26°C in January and February and about 14°C in June and July. The real difference is light: December averages more than nine hours of sunshine a day, midwinter fewer than four. For a day built around views, a bright day matters more than a hot one.
Cruise ships call from November to April, landing passengers by tender at the port. This tour runs from 07:00 to 15:00 and starts and ends at an address in town, so check that your time ashore covers it. If it does not, the half-day peninsula tour was built for a cruise call.
Where the hours go
Morning: the peninsula and La Barra
About an hour and a half goes on the peninsula and the port. The sculpture is the work of the Chilean Mario Irarrázabal, made in 1982 for an open-air sculpture meeting in the town. The lighthouse dates from 1860 and is run by the navy. It stays closed to visitors except on Heritage Day in October, so you see it from the street. At the port, look for the sea lions by the fish stalls.
From 09:30 you cross the wavy bridge to La Barra. If you would like to carry on to Manantiales, say so; it is on the day's plan as an option.
Late morning: the arboretum
At 11:00 you swing west to the Lussich Arboretum. Antonio Lussich began planting these hills in the late 1890s, and the wood now holds more than 400 species from abroad and around 70 native ones over 192 hectares. An hour is enough for a short walk under the trees.
Lunch and Casapueblo
Lunch is at noon at Punta Ballena, in one of the restaurants by the sea or at Casapueblo itself. It is not included, so choose what suits your group. Then, from 13:30, you have the white house on the cliffs. Carlos Páez Vilaró built it over 36 years without plans, and its museum, in the main dome, opens every day. The entrance is paid at the door.
What you can change
The vehicle is yours for the day, so the order can bend. Tell your driver in the morning if you want longer at the port and less at the arboretum, or a beach stop instead of La Barra. Fuel, tolls and parking are covered. Casapueblo entrance, boat trips and lunch are not.
The most common change is the sunset. Every evening, shortly before the sun goes down, a recording of Páez Vilaró reading a poem to the sun plays on the Casapueblo terraces. The tour ends at about 15:00. If you want to be there, ask us when you book and we will move the times.
Who it suits, and what to leave out
- Travellers with one day in town who want the whole of it.
- Groups of mixed interests: there is art, a wood, a port and a beach village in the same day.
- Groups of up to 16 in one vehicle; above that, two vehicles travel together on one booking.
Leave José Ignacio for another day. It lies about forty minutes beyond La Barra, and it gets a proper visit on our José Ignacio and Garzón day trip. The Isla Gorriti boat is also hard to fit into a day this full; the peninsula half-day leaves room for it.
