Twenty-seven centuries in one city, and most of it a short walk from somewhere a car can stop. We drive the gaps, so the day is spent at the sites and not between them.

The day

The historic centre is largely closed to cars, so the driver drops you at one edge of a quarter and meets you at the other. You walk the best parts and ride the rest.

Collected from the door.

07:30

Trevi and the Spanish Steps

The fountain is never empty and never less than worth it, and early in the day it is at its quietest. Then the 135 steps up to Trinità dei Monti.

08:30

The Colosseum and the Roman Forum

The amphitheatre first, then the Forum and the Palatine Hill above it — the centre of the Roman world, still laid out street by street.
Entrance not included

11:15

The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and lunch

A temple nearly nineteen centuries old whose concrete dome is still the largest unreinforced one in the world. Five minutes away, a Roman stadium turned into a square with three Baroque fountains. Lunch in the lanes around them.
Small entrance fee, not included

13:30

St Peter’s Square

Bernini’s colonnade, and the basilica if the queue allows. Entry is free; shoulders and knees covered to go inside.

15:00

Back where you want to be
