ItalyPompeii and the Amalfi Coast: from Rome, or from Sorrento?

Oct 5, 2026, 4 min read, by Exclusive World Tours

The Amalfi Coast is about 250 km from Rome. You can see it in a day from the capital, or stay on the coast and see it slowly. Both are private days with your own driver; they suit different trips.

From Rome: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day

The longest day we run in Italy, thirteen hours. We collect you early from your hotel in Rome, because the motorway south is fastest before the city wakes.

  • Pompeii: two hours in the excavated city, the forum, houses still painted inside, bakeries with their ovens, and Vesuvius over everything.
  • Lunch above the sea, across the Sorrento peninsula.
  • The Amalfi Drive, the coast road carved along the cliffs.
  • Positano: time to walk down, have a coffee, and be collected again.

Entrance to Pompeii is not included. In Italy, guiding inside the sites is reserved for licensed guides, and we can book one to meet you at the gate. From €730 for up to four people.

From Sorrento: Positano, Amalfi and Ravello

Eight hours, collected in Sorrento, Naples or anywhere on the coast. From Naples, add about an hour each way.

  • Positano, with time to walk down through the lanes.
  • The coast road, past Praiano and the Furore fjord, with stops wherever the view asks for one.
  • Amalfi and lunch: the cathedral at the top of its steps and the old paper mills up the valley.
  • Ravello, on its ridge, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone.

The gardens, the cathedral cloister and lunch are not included. From €360 for up to four people.

Which one?

If Rome is your base and you have one day, the long day from Rome is the way to see both Pompeii and the coast. If you are staying on the coast, the day from Sorrento is slower, cheaper and adds Amalfi and Ravello. Families with young children often prefer Pompeii on its own from Rome, which brings you back by late afternoon.

Going to Capri? Capri is reached by boat, not by road. We can drop you at the ferry in Sorrento or Positano and collect you when you come back.
