A guide to private tours from RomeThree ways to spend a day.

How long each one needs, what is included, and which to pick if you only have one day.

Rome holds twenty-seven centuries in one city, and two of the best days in central Italy start from it: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast to the south, and the villas of Tivoli to the east. Here is what each of our three Rome tours involves.

If it is your first time in Rome: the Rome tour by car. If you want one day outside the city: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast if you can take a thirteen-hour day, Tivoli if you cannot.

The three, side by side

How to choose

You want Rome in a day

The Rome tour by car. Eight hours: the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, and St Peter's Square. We drive the gaps, so the day is spent at the sites. The Vatican Museums can be added in place of the Spanish Steps.

You want the day people talk about afterwards

Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. Thirteen hours, the longest day we run in Italy: two hours in the excavated city, lunch above the sea, the Amalfi Drive, and Positano. Families with young children often prefer Pompeii on its own, which brings you back to Rome by late afternoon.

You want half a day, and somewhere quieter

Tivoli. Six hours, starting at 07:00 or 13:00: Hadrian's Villa, the emperor's private city of pools and colonnades, and the Villa d'Este, a Renaissance garden of hundreds of fountains. You are back in Rome by mid-afternoon.

Four things worth knowing before you book

Guiding inside the sites is for licensed guides

In Italy, guiding inside the monuments is reserved for licensed guides. Your driver takes you to the door; if you want a guide inside the Colosseum, Pompeii or the villas, we can book one to meet you there. Entrances are not included.

Cover shoulders and knees for St Peter's

Entry to the basilica is free, but shoulders and knees have to be covered to go inside. Bring a scarf or a light layer on the Rome day.

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us and we will do our best to move you to another day.
