A guide to day trips from DublinThe five worth taking.

How long each one really needs, what it costs, and which to pick if you only have one day.

Dublin is small and Ireland is not. Most of what people come to see — the Atlantic cliffs, the basalt coast, the monastic valleys — is a drive away. Here is how long each one really needs, and which to pick if you only have one day.

If you have one day and want the thing people photograph: the Cliffs of Moher. If you have one day and would rather not spend six hours in a car: Wicklow and Glendalough.

How to choose

You have one day, and it has to count

Take the Cliffs of Moher. Two hundred metres of vertical Atlantic rock is the image people carry home, and the day picks up Bunratty Castle, the Burren and two hours in Galway on the way. It is twelve and a half hours and roughly six of those are driving, so know what you are signing up for.

You do not want a long drive

Wicklow and Glendalough. Everything is within an hour of the city: a sixth-century monastic settlement in a glacial valley, Ireland's highest waterfall, and a mountain pass with nothing built on it. Seven hours, and the shortest time in the car of any of these.

You want the north

Belfast, the Giant's Causeway and the Titanic museum. Thirteen hours, the longest day here, crossing into the United Kingdom — there is no border check, but most visitors who are not British or Irish need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for the north. Worth it for the Antrim coast road alone.

You only have half a day

The Dublin chauffeur tour. Four hours covers Trinity College, Dublin Castle, both cathedrals and Phoenix Park, which is the sort of thing that takes two days on foot in Irish weather.

You want photographs of yourselves, not of scenery

The photography walk. Two hours with a professional photographer between the Ha'penny Bridge, Temple Bar and Trinity, and an edited gallery by email a few days later.

Four things worth knowing before you book any of them

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

The early start is the point

The Cliffs and Belfast tours leave at 07:00. That is not us being awkward: it is what puts you at the cliffs before the coaches, and it changes the place completely. Start times can move if you ask — just know what you are trading.

Rain is not a reason to cancel

It will rain. The cliffs in moving weather beat the cliffs in flat sunshine, and every one of these runs in it. Bring a coat and shoes you do not mind getting wet.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us — we run several vehicles and there is usually room to move you.
