A guide to day trips from Puerto NatalesTorres del Paine, and how.

How long each one takes, what is not included, and which to pick if you only have one day.

Torres del Paine is about two hours from Puerto Natales, across the Patagonian steppe, so every day in the park is a long one. Three of our days drive through it, one takes walkers to the trail to the foot of the towers, and one stays close to town at the Milodon Cave. Here is what each of our five involves.

One day: Torres del Paine, for the towers from Laguna Amarga, Salto Grande, Lago Pehoé and the icebergs of Lago Grey. If you walk well and want to stand under the towers: the Base Torres hike.

How to choose

You have one day in the park

Torres del Paine. Eleven hours from 07:00: the first view of the three towers across Laguna Amarga, the Salto Grande waterfall under the Cuernos, lunch by Lago Pehoé, and a walk on the beach at Lago Grey among the icebergs. Wind and cloud change by the hour, and your driver changes the order to give you the best chance of clear views.

You want the park and the cave in one go

Torres del Paine and the Milodon Cave. Twelve hours: the same day in the park, with the Milodon Cave on the way home, the great cavern where the remains of a giant ground sloth were found in 1895. It is a long day; if you would rather split it, take the cave as a half day on arrival.

You would rather have time by the water

Lago Grey and Lago Pehoé. Ten hours, with fewer stops than the full day: Salto Grande, Lago Pehoé and its small island, and a long stop at Lago Grey to walk the beach among the icebergs. Boat trips to the face of the glacier run in some seasons, with their own tickets; ask before booking and we plan the day around one.

You want to walk to the towers

The Base Torres hike. Twelve hours: your driver takes you to the Welcome Centre, waits while you walk, and drives you home. The walk is about 20 km there and back, 6 to 10 hours, with a steep last climb over boulders. We do not guide it, and from about May to September the trail needs an authorised guide, paid separately.

You have just arrived, or need a rest day

The waterfront and the Milodon Cave. Four hours, at 07:00 or 13:00: the Última Esperanza sound and the old Braun & Blanchard pier, the Milodon Cave with the life-size replica at its entrance, and the trail to the viewpoint above it. Short drives and short walks.

Four things worth knowing before you book

Buy the park pass before the day

Torres del Paine passes are sold online only, through CONAF. Bring the QR code and your passport: there is no internet at the gate. The price covers the private vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and parking; the park pass, the Milodon Cave entrance, boats and lunch are paid separately.

Dress for the wind

The weather changes fast. Bring windproof layers, waterproofs and snacks for the long days. In winter some areas of the park have restrictions or need an authorised guide.

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us and we will do our best to move you to another day.
