An hour south of Dublin the country changes completely. If you have one day and no wish to spend six hours of it in a car, Wicklow is the answer: seven hours door to door, with everything within an hour of the city.
The four stops
The Sally Gap
A mountain pass across open bog, with nothing built on it. This is the road people picture when they picture Wicklow.
Lough Tay
The dark lake with a white sand beach at one end, which is why everyone calls it the Guinness Lake. The Vikings in the television series were filmed here.
Glendalough
A sixth-century monastic city in a glacial valley, founded by Saint Kevin, with its round tower still standing. It is free to enter, and as much walking as you want: ten minutes or two hours. The paths to the upper lake are flat and good.
Powerscourt Estate and Waterfall
Formal gardens laid out in the eighteenth century, and one of the highest waterfalls in Ireland at the other end of the estate. Entry to the estate is not included in the price; your guide will tell you on the day whether the gardens are worth it.
Room for more
Because none of this is far, the day has space for an extra stop. Avoca, Kilruddery or the coast road through Greystones all fit. Ask your guide, or tell us when you book.
In winter
The Sally Gap can close in snow, and it is dark by four. When that happens we change the route on the day rather than cancel.
From €630 for up to four people, with pick-up and drop-off at your Dublin hotel. The price depends on the size of your group, up to 16.
