IrelandBelfast and the Giant's Causeway from Dublin: what to know before you go

Oct 5, 2026, 4 min read, by Exclusive World Tours

The day north is the longest we run out of Dublin, thirteen hours with about six of them driving. It is also the one with the most in it: a volcanic coastline, one of the great drives in Europe, the museum of the most famous ship ever built, and a city that has changed more than almost any in Europe.

How the day runs

We collect you from your Dublin hotel at 07:00. The Giant's Causeway is about three hours north, so you arrive at around ten, early enough to have the columns to yourself for a while.

From the Causeway the Antrim coast road takes you south, with Dunluce Castle on its cliff and the glens opening up inland. In the afternoon you reach Titanic Belfast, then spend two hours in the city itself: the murals, the Cathedral Quarter and the old pubs. You are back in Dublin at around eight in the evening, depending on the traffic.

What is included

  • Your own vehicle and driver-guide for the whole day, from your hotel door.
  • Your ticket to the Giant's Causeway visitor centre. The stones themselves are free to walk.
  • Your Titanic Belfast ticket.
  • Fuel, tolls and parking.

Lunch is your own, with a stop on the coast or in Belfast.

Crossing into Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. There is no checkpoint on the road and nobody will stop the car, but three things matter:

The UK ETA

Unless you are a British or Irish citizen, or a legal resident of Ireland, the UK asks visitors to Northern Ireland to hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation, even on a day trip from Dublin. Apply on gov.uk before you travel, and check the current rules for your nationality.

Photo ID

Carry your passport or photo ID as a matter of course.

Pounds, not euros

The north uses pounds sterling. Cards work everywhere, so there is no need to change money.

Who it suits

Anyone with one day and a wish to see more than Dublin. It is a long day in the car, so with small children it is worth thinking twice. And because it is private, you can change it: skip the museum and stay longer on the coast, or spend more time in Belfast. Tell your guide in the morning.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If the day does not work out, you get the full amount back.
