IrelandWhy the Cliffs of Moher Deserve a Full Day, Not a Quick Stop

May 22, 2025, 3 min read, by Exclusive World Tours

The Cliffs of Moher are three hours from Dublin. On most coach trips that means six hours on the road for about an hour at the cliffs, shared with everyone else who left at the same time. Given a full day, the same cliffs are a different place.

The hour problem

The cliffs run for about fourteen kilometres along the Clare coast and rise to around two hundred metres above the Atlantic. Well over a million people visit every year, and most of them arrive in the middle of the day, in the middle of the car park, at the same viewing platform.

An hour is enough to see that platform. It is not enough to walk the path out to O'Brien's Tower and back, to wait for the cloud to lift off the sea, or to stand somewhere quiet enough to hear the birds on the rock below you.

What the early start buys you

Our Cliffs of Moher tour leaves your Dublin hotel at 07:00. That is the whole trick. With a photo stop at Bunratty Castle on the way, you reach the cliffs at about 10:30, before the coaches, while the light is still low across the water.

You then have an hour and three quarters there, with your entrance already included. Long enough to walk out along the edge without watching the clock.

The rest of the west, on the same road

A full day also means the cliffs are not the only thing you see. On the way north the road crosses the Burren, a limestone pavement that looks like nowhere else in Ireland, with the Poulnabrone Dolmen standing in the middle of it. Then Kinvara, a harbour village with Dunguaire Castle sitting at the water's edge.

By mid-afternoon you are in Galway, with two hours on foot through the old town with your guide and time of your own after that. You are back at your hotel at around 19:30, depending on the traffic on the M6.

Why private makes the difference

On a private tour the vehicle carries nobody but your group. If the weather is better in the afternoon, you can swap the order. If someone wants longer at the cliffs and less in Galway, your guide changes the day. Every one of our tours is customisable: tell us when you book, or on the day.

In short: the Cliffs of Moher are worth the drive only if you give them the time. Leave early, arrive before the crowds, and let the rest of the west coast fill the day.
