Brazil planning guidePlanning a day at Praia dos Carneiros and Tamandaré from Recife

Oct 15, 2026, 6 min read, by Exclusive World Tours

Praia dos Carneiros is a long way from Recife for a beach, and that is the first thing to weigh. This guide is for you if you are thinking about the day and want to know what you are trading: more time in the car for a quieter beach, a chapel on the sand and an afternoon on a river estuary. It covers how access to the beach works, how to pick a date, and how this day compares with Porto de Galinhas.

The distance, honestly

Carneiros is about 100 km south of Recife. Allow an hour and three quarters each way. You are collected at 07:00, you leave the beach at about 15:15, and you are back at your hotel at about 17:00. That is three and a half hours on the road in a ten-hour day.

The rest is mostly beach. Apart from a short stop at the fort in Tamandaré on the way, you spend about five hours at Carneiros itself. If you want a day of moving between places, Porto de Galinhas fits it better. If you want to sit in one place and stay there, this is the day.

If you are staying at Porto de Galinhas rather than in Recife, we can collect you there instead. Carneiros is about 50 km further south, so the drive is shorter. Message us for a price.

How you get onto the beach

This is the part that surprises people. Carneiros has no public access. You reach the sand through one of the bars or inns along the beach, and they charge a day-use fee per person. The fee is not included in the tour, and you pay it on the day.

Which bar or inn you go in through is up to you. Ask your driver about the options on the way down, and say what your group wants from the day: a quiet table, a long lunch, or simply a way onto the sand.

Picking a date: tide, moon and rain

The reef pools at Carneiros appear at low tide, and we plan the order of the day around the tide table. On this coast the lowest tides come in the weeks of the new and full moon, so if the pools matter to you, a date near either is the best choice. Tell us when you book, and we will look at the tide for your date.

The weather is the other factor. Along this coast the drier months run from September to March. From April to August there is more rain, and on wet days the open boats may not go out. That matters here more than on most beach days, because a boat on the estuary is a large part of the afternoon.

The three things you come to see

The fort at Tamandaré

The first stop is in the town of Tamandaré, at the fort of Santo Inácio de Loyola. It was built at the end of the 17th century to guard Tamandaré bay. It is a short stop on the way to the beach.

The São Benedito chapel

The small white chapel stands on the sand at Carneiros, among the coconut palms. It is privately owned, and has been in the same family for almost a century.

The Rio Formoso estuary

After lunch, boats and catamarans leave from Carneiros for the estuary of the Rio Formoso, the reef pools and the sandbank across the river. The boat is not included and is paid on the spot. The afternoon is left free for it.

A word on swimming

The water at Carneiros is warm and shallow, and the reef pools at low tide are calm. The estuary is different. Pernambuco's shark monitoring committee advises bathers to keep out of the water at river mouths and estuaries, at high tide, at dawn and dusk, and anywhere deeper than the waist. Follow the local signs and any lifeguards, and swim where the water is sheltered.

Carneiros or Porto de Galinhas?

Both are reef beaches south of Recife, and both depend on the tide. The difference is the shape of the day.

  • Porto de Galinhas is closer, about an hour from Recife, and moves between three places: the pools in front of the village, the calm bay at Muro Alto and the river mouth at Maracaípe.
  • Carneiros is further, and the day settles in one place, with a chapel, a beach club and a boat on the river.

They do not fit into one day together without rushing. If you have time for both, do them on separate days, and see our Porto de Galinhas day trip for the other one. Our guide to day trips from Recife sets all six of our Recife tours side by side.

What to bring

  • Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes for the long drive home.
  • Sun cream, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Cash for the day-use fee, the boat and lunch, none of which are included.
  • Something to read for the car. Three and a half hours is a lot of road.

Who it suits, and who should think twice

It suits couples and families who want a slow day on one beach, and anyone staying long enough in the area to have already seen Olinda and Recife.

Think twice if anyone in your group dislikes long drives, or if you have young children who will not sit still in the car. Porto de Galinhas is closer. Think twice, too, if you land in Recife the same morning: book the beach for the next day and use our airport transfers to reach your hotel.

Groups of more than 16 travel in two vehicles on one booking. Message us with your numbers. The price depends on the size of your group; see it on the tour page.

Questions people ask

Is there time for a boat trip?

Yes. The afternoon is free for a catamaran or a boat on the estuary, paid on the spot.

Can we cancel?

Yes. Cancel up to 24 hours before pick-up and you are refunded in full. See our cancellation page.

Booking the day

Choose a dry-season date near the new or full moon if you can, bring cash for the beach and the boat, and accept the drive as the price of a quieter beach. The stops, times and what is included are on the Praia dos Carneiros and Tamandaré private day trip page, where you choose the size of your group and book.
