United KingdomLoch Ness and the Highlands from Edinburgh in a day

Oct 5, 2026, 3 min read, by Exclusive World Tours

Loch Ness is a long way from Edinburgh, and that is the point. The road north through Perthshire and the Cairngorms, and the road home through Glencoe, are as much the day as the loch itself.

The loop

About 370 miles: up the A9 to Loch Ness, down the Great Glen, and south through Glencoe.

Pitlochry

A Victorian town on the River Tummel, about an hour and a half in: coffee, and the first real hills.

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

Twenty-three miles long and, in places, deeper than the North Sea. Urquhart Castle sits on a point above the water.

Fort Augustus, and lunch

At the southern end of the loch, where the Caledonian Canal climbs out of it through a flight of locks. Boat cruises leave from here and near Urquhart; tell us if you want one and we will fit it in.

Glencoe

The glen of the 1692 massacre, with the Three Sisters standing over the road.

Rannoch Moor

Fifty square miles of bog, lochan and sky, on the way south.

Good to know

  • Twelve hours, private, with pick-up and drop-off anywhere in Edinburgh.
  • Entrance to Urquhart Castle and any boat trip are not included.
  • Highland weather changes by the hour. Bring a waterproof, whatever the forecast says.
  • Staying in Glasgow? We can start there, and Glencoe is closer. Message us.
