A guide to day trips from MaceióNorth for the reefs, south for Gunga.

How long each one takes, what is not included, and which to pick if you only have one day.

Maceió is a narrow city between the Atlantic and the Mundaú lagoon, and most people come for the reef pools at low tide. They run up the coast to the north: Paripueira about 30 km away, São Miguel dos Milagres about 100, Maragogi about 130. To the south are the old town of Marechal Deodoro and the beach at Gunga. Here is what each of our five involves.

One day, and the reef pools are the point: Maragogi, if three hours on the road each way does not put you off. One day with less driving: Paripueira, or the south coast and Gunga.

How to choose

You want the Galés, whatever the drive

Maragogi. Twelve hours, the longest day here: about three hours each way, a boat trip of about two hours to the Galés reef pools some 6 km offshore, timed to low tide, then the beaches at Antunes and Ponta de Mangue. We recommend licensed boat operators and drop you at the right pier; the boat is paid to them directly.

You want the quiet north coast and the manatees

São Miguel dos Milagres and the Rota Ecológica. Ten hours: the reef pools at Praia do Toque, about an hour up the Rio Tatuamunha on a jangada without a motor with the Associação Peixe-Boi, and the palms of Praia do Patacho. Sightings are not guaranteed, and places on the river are limited, so book the boat in advance.

You want reef pools without the long drive

Paripueira. Eight hours, about 30 km each way: the reef pools about 1 km off the beach at low tide, the warm water and coconut groves of Sonho Verde, and the beaches of Ipioca on the way back. It suits families, and anyone who would rather not spend six hours in the car to Maragogi.

You want an old town and a beach

Marechal Deodoro, Francês and Gunga. Eight hours of short drives: the colonial town that was the first capital of Alagoas, the beach at Francês, Barra de São Miguel, and Praia do Gunga, inside a private coconut farm between the river and the sea. Every stop is within an hour of Maceió.

You only have half a day

The Maceió city tour. Four hours, at 07:00 or 13:00: the reef pools off Pajuçara, the seafront at Ponta Verde and Jatiúca, the old port quarter of Jaraguá, and the lace-makers' streets of Pontal da Barra on the lagoon.

Four things worth knowing before you book

The tide decides the day

The reef pools at Pajuçara, Paripueira, Milagres and the Galés need low tide, and the Galés boats do not run when it is high. We set the order of each day by the tide table, and for Maragogi we check it before we confirm your date.

Boats are paid on the spot

The price covers the private vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and parking, including the parking fee at the gate at Gunga. Jangadas and boats to the pools, the manatee trip, buggy rides, beach-club fees and lunch are paid on the day.

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us and we will do our best to move you to another day.
