A guide to private tours from LondonFive ways to spend a day.

How long each one needs, what is included, and which to pick if you only have one day.

London can fill a week on its own, and the England people picture — standing stones, college quads, villages of honey-coloured stone — is a drive away. Here is what each of our five London tours involves, and which to pick if you only have one day.

If it is your first day in London: the central London tour. If you have one day to spend outside the city: Stonehenge and Oxford.

How to choose

It is your first day in London

The central London tour. Four hours covers the three landmarks everyone comes for: Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Parliament, and the Tower of London. Eight hours adds lunch, the British Museum, which is free to enter, and Covent Garden and Hyde Park. The four-hour version starts at 07:00 or 13:00.

You have one day outside the city

Stonehenge and Oxford. Twelve hours from 07:00, with the stones in the morning before the crowds and the colleges in the afternoon. Both entrances are included: skip-the-line entry to Stonehenge, and Christ Church College, with a walking tour of Oxford.

You want the England of the films

Bath and the Cotswolds. Eleven hours: the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and the Royal Crescent, then the villages of Castle Combe and Bibury on the way home. Stonehenge can take the place of one of the villages.

You only have half a day

Windsor. Six hours, starting at 07:00 or 13:00: the castle, where Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth II are buried in St George's Chapel, then Eton across the river, and Runnymede, where Magna Carta was sealed in 1215.

You want photographs of yourselves

The photography walk. Three hours with a professional photographer from Big Ben across Westminster Bridge to Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden, and an edited gallery by email a few days later. Up to eight people.

Four things worth knowing before you book

Check what each ticket covers

Stonehenge and Oxford is the only one with the entrances included. On the central London, Windsor and Bath tours the entry tickets are yours to buy: it is cheaper online, and your guide will tell you which are worth going into.

Some of these combine

Windsor fits into a full day with Stonehenge or with Oxford, and Stonehenge can be added to the Bath day. Ask us and we will price the version you want.

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us and we will do our best to move you to another day.
