A guide to private tours from Belo HorizonteGold towns, art and Niemeyer.

How long each one needs, what is included, and which to pick if you only have one day.

Belo Horizonte is a planned city, and much of what people come to Minas Gerais for is outside it: the old gold towns and Aleijadinho's carving, the contemporary art of Inhotim, and the hill villages on the old Estrada Real. Here is what each of our five tours involves, and which to pick if you only have one day.

If you have one day: Ouro Preto and Mariana. If contemporary art means more to you than baroque churches: Inhotim.

How to choose

You have one day, and want the gold towns

Ouro Preto and Mariana. Ten hours, about two hours each way: Praça Tiradentes, Aleijadinho's church of São Francisco de Assis with Mestre Ataíde's painted ceiling, the Museu da Inconfidência, a lunch of comida mineira, then Mariana and its cathedral with the German organ. Many museums and churches in Ouro Preto close on Mondays.

You want contemporary art

Inhotim, in Brumadinho. Nine hours, most of them on foot inside the park: galleries and outdoor works by Brazilian and international artists, set among lakes, palms and gardens. Inhotim does not open every day, so we check your date before we confirm.

You only have half a day

The Belo Horizonte city tour. Four hours, starting at 07:00 or 13:00: Praça da Liberdade, the Mercado Central, and Niemeyer's church of São Francisco de Assis, with Portinari's tiles, by the Pampulha lake. It can end at Confins airport.

You want Aleijadinho

Congonhas and Sabará. Nine hours: Aleijadinho's twelve soapstone prophets at the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, then the gilded churches of Sabará, the tiny Nossa Senhora do Ó and the Matriz. Ouro Preto is not on this day; it has its own.

You want somewhere quiet

Lavras Novas. Ten hours on the old Estrada Real: Cachoeira do Campo and its baroque church, a slow drive through Ouro Preto, and the hill village of Lavras Novas, with a long lunch of country food. It is cooler up there, so bring a warm layer.

Four things worth knowing before you book

Tickets are paid on the day

The price covers the private vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Church and museum entrances, the Inhotim ticket and lunch are paid on the day. The churches keep short and changing hours, and we check them for your date.

Wear shoes with a grip

Ouro Preto's streets are very steep and the stones are slippery when wet, and Congonhas and Sabará are cobbled too. Inhotim is large and hilly.

Private costs less than you think for a group

A coach seat is cheap for one person and stops being cheap at four. Our prices are by group size, not per seat: up to four of you share one car at one price, and the price only steps up when you need a van. And you are not waiting for forty strangers at every stop.

You can change your mind

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up, refunded in full. If the date stops working, message us and we will do our best to move you to another day.
